Product: Cydiance B5 — Bluetooth + USB Single-Use Temperature Logger (LCD)

Document version / date: v1.0 — 2026-08-14

Language: English

This is the complete B5 manual — suitable to hand to a new customer or attach to a shipment/customs file. For a short on-site reference, use B5 — For shippers and B5 — For receivers.
1 · Product overview

The B5 is Cydiance's Bluetooth + USB temperature logger with an LCD. There are no LED status lights — hold the button ~5 seconds to start; read temperature and status on the screen without a phone. At destination, download over Bluetooth without opening the bag, or plug USB for onboard PDF + CSV. Silent Records keeps a factory backup CSV if the start is missed. The left side has two reserved probe jacks — upper T/H, lower temperature needle. Fit one probe type per logger, not both.

What's in the box: Device in its bag. Leave the bag on for the trip and for Bluetooth readout. Open it only if you need USB. The external probe is an accessory — order the needle or the T/H probe, not both on one logger.

1.1 LCD

All on-device status is on the LCD. Press the button once to wake it; the screen turns off after 5 seconds to save battery. The frames below are line drawings of the LCD — not photographs of the glass.

Icon / textMeaning
NULLNot started
Delay + countdown + PlayStart delay is running; recording auto-starts when the countdown reaches zero
Play triangle (▶)The logger is recording
Check markNo temperature alert on this trip (so far)

1.2 Button

One physical button on the front. Hold ~5 seconds to start; short-press to wake the LCD, cycle the summary, or mark an event. There is no stop gesture.

Action / stateWhat you see
Start — hold ~5 sLCD leaves NULL and shows Play (or Delay if a start delay is running)
Wake / status check — short pressLCD on for ~5 seconds, then off. Play = still recording; NULL = not started; block = stopped
MARK — short press while loggingAn event mark is stored (up to 8); the LCD also wakes. Marks appear in the PDF/CSV/App
Cycle MAX / MIN / AVG / durationFurther short presses while the LCD is awake step through the routine in §1.1
Why no stop button? Field use showed accidental or premature stops before arrival. Cydiance removed manual stop: the logger runs until the 14,400-record limit. See Why is there no stop button?.

1.3 Cydiance App

Use the Cydiance App at destination to download the trip over Bluetooth — bag on. USB still writes PDF and CSV if the buyer wants a file. Why Bluetooth: Why use Bluetooth?. Clients: Cydiance Apps (Android, iOS, and WeChat).

2 · For shippers
Do not remove the plastic bag unless you need USB access for final readings. Keep the bag on during the whole trip — that is what Bluetooth readout is for.

2.1 Start the device

  1. Press and hold the button for 5 seconds.
  2. Confirm on the LCD: Play (recording) or Delay (will auto-start). If you still see NULL, it has not started — hold 5 seconds again.
  3. The LCD turns off after 5 seconds. Press once to wake it and re-check.
  4. While logging, a short press also stores a MARK (up to 8).
  5. The logger cannot be stopped manually; it stops when the data limit is reached.

2.2 Place in the shipment

When possible, use two loggers for the simplest temperature mapping:

  1. Place one at the container air outlet to record supply-air temperature from the refrigeration unit.
  2. Place one at the container door to capture temperature coverage across the load.

Keep each logger in its bag. Before sealing, press the button and confirm the LCD still shows Play (or Delay if that is intended).

Additional placement notes (pallet / carton):

  • Prefer the last pallet — that is where temperature accidents show up more often.
  • If the risk is too hot (upper threshold), place the logger toward the top of the load.
  • If the risk is too cold (lower threshold), place the logger toward the bottom.

If a pulp / core reading is required, fit the temperature needle before the trip (one probe type per logger).

2.3 Receiving side

If you are receiving the shipment, see §3. Short guide: B5 — For receivers.

Safety

Do not place the device near a fire — the battery can be dangerous.

Keep away from babies, children, and pets; this device is not a toy (coin-cell ingestion hazard).

Consider the recycling program before disposing of the device (currently China inbound take-back; contact support for other routes).

3 · For receivers

On arrival, press the button to wake the LCD. Play means it is still recording; NULL means it never started; a block means it has already stopped. Then export PDF and CSV via USB, or download over Bluetooth with the Cydiance App — bag still on.

3.1 Bluetooth (recommended when the seal must stay intact)

  1. Install the Cydiance App (Android, iOS, or WeChat).
  2. Enable Bluetooth and connect to the logger — do not open the bag.
  3. Download the trip. Charts, summaries, and share/export are in the App.

The App view uses the phone time zone. PDF/CSV written on USB stay on the device time zone (default UTC+0).

3.2 USB connected to a PC

  1. Remove the plastic bag if needed.
  2. Plug the USB connector into the computer.
  3. Wait about 30 seconds for PDF and CSV files to appear. If they do not, wait up to a minute and try another port.

3.3 USB connected to Android

  1. Use a suitable USB OTG adapter (data, not charge-only).
  2. Plug in the logger and open PDF/CSV from your file manager.

3.4 What is in the report

The onboard PDF is built from the full trip dataset (up to 14,400 points) so short temperature spikes stay visible — not a smoothed thumbnail. Summaries typically include maximum, minimum, average, and MKT. Chart design notes: How are PDF charts built?. MKT: MKT. Silent Records: What is Silent Records?.

3.5 Optional — Cydiance Logger Reader (Windows)

Receiving desks that plug many USB loggers can run Cydiance Logger Reader: it watches USB, imports the CSV, and opens a local browser view. Not required for a single readout or for Bluetooth.

Shipping side: §2 or B5 — For shippers.

Improper storage, installation, or shipment/container placement causing damage is not covered under warranty (see §7.2).

5 · Battery, safety & transport compliance

The B5 is powered by a built-in 3.0V CR2450 lithium metal coin cell. It is not user-replaceable. The cell is contained in the equipment (not shipped as a spare battery).

5.1 Battery specification

ItemValue
Battery typeLithium metal coin cell, CR2450, 3.0V
Lithium content< 1 g / cell (under the Section II threshold)
Replaceable by user?No
Warranty12 months (label Shelf life / Service life)

5.2 Transport compliance

For air transport the B5 is treated as UN3091 — lithium metal batteries contained in equipment — under IATA DGR Packing Instruction 970 Section II. Most carriers accept Section II without a full dangerous-goods declaration when lithium content stays below 1 g/cell; confirm any operator variations with the airline. Sea: IMDG Code 2018 P903.

B5 is additionally tested to RTCA/DO-160G (airborne equipment EMC). Radio: FCC Part 15. Maintain at least 20 cm between the device (and its antenna) and the body during operation. Do not co-locate with another transmitter. Unauthorized modification can void the user's authority to operate the equipment.

5.3 What Cydiance can provide on request

  • Battery / UN3091 supporting letter for carrier or customs files
  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) summary
  • FCC / sDOC, CE, RoHS, and DO-160G references, on request

5.4 Safety notes

  • Do not puncture, crush, drop, or incinerate the device.
  • Do not disassemble the device or attempt to replace the coin cell.
  • Keep away from children and pets — coin cells are an ingestion hazard.
  • Do not place near fire or operate outside the ranges in §4.
  • Stop using the device and contact [email protected] if you notice swelling, leakage, discoloration, or an unusual smell.
